چکیده

The MIN algorithm is an offline strategy for deciding which item to replace when writing a new item to a cache. Its optimality was first established byMattson, Gecsei, Slutz, and Traiger [2] through a lengthy analysis. We provide a short and elementary proof based on a dynamic programming argument.

Reduction in Cache Memory Power Consumption based on Replacement Quantity

Today power consumption is considered to be one of the important issues. Therefore, its reduction plays a considerable role in developing systems. Previous studies have shown that approximately 50% of total power consumption is used in cache memories. There is a direct relationship between power consumption and replacement quantity made in cache. The less the number of replacements is, the less...

A Proof of the Optimality of the MIN Paging Algorithm Using Linear Programming Duality1

A linear programming formulation of the page replacement problem is used for proving the opti-mality of the MIN algorithm in a novel way. We describe an algorithm for constructing a solution for the dual problem such that the cost of this solution equals the cost of the MIN solution for the primal problem, thus proving the optimality of the MIN solution for paging, and the optimality of our alg...

Erasing Belady's Limitations: In Search of Flash Cache Offline Optimality

NAND-based solid-state (flash) drives are known for providing better performance than magnetic disk drives, but they have limits on endurance, the number of times data can be erased and overwritten. Furthermore, the unit of erasure can be many times larger than the basic unit of I/O; this leads to complexity with respect to consolidating live data and erasing obsolete data. When flash drives ar...

A SHORT PROOF FOR THE EXISTENCE OF HAAR MEASURE ON COMMUTATIVE HYPERGROUPS

In this short note, we have given a short proof for the existence of the Haar measure on commutative locally compact hypergroups based on functional analysis methods by using Markov-Kakutani fixed point theorem.
